What is ictiotherapy?
The ictiotherapy is carried out with the help of small Garra Rufa fish originating in Turkey.
These small fish have no teeth, have a small cup as a mouth that sucks the impurities stay in the skin and the remains of dead skin. The result is an exfoliating treatment, a good massage helps improve circulation, relax and moisturize deeply.
Treatment consists of putting your feet in warm water, where they almost immediately hundreds of fish begin doing their job. At first you feel a slight tingling sensation that time transform into a pleasant and relaxing massage. Fish sucking calluses and dead skin leaving your feet and skin as new.
Result: You will feel your feet cool and healthy and can enjoy the touch! The sensation is a great break after a treatment like a massage in one of the most sensitive body parts, the Garra Rufa can stimulate acupuncture points to help regulate the nervous system, relaxing the body and relieves fatigue. The blood circulation and the flow is increased significantly during this treatment.
You can choose between sessions of 15 or 30 minutes and at the end of the session it feels to have made the best pedicure.
It is important to know that some people take advantage and offer treatments ictiotherapy with other fish that do have teeth, called tchin-tchin fish from Asia and can seriously damage the skin. The only fish that serve the ictiotherapy are these, the Garra Rufa.
For your safety you can ask in our center are certified as authentic Garra Rufa fish, which have been imported with total guarantee and have been inspected by accredited veterinarians in the country of origin and have passed the veterinary inspection at the Barcelona Airport Customs fulfilling all requirements set by the European Union.

7 Things You Didn’t Know About Your Skin
Taking care of your skin is probably second nature by now. You know to slather on SPF each morning and scan for new and changing moles to keep your skin happy and healthy. But despite understanding how to combat wrinkles and ward off disease, there’s a fair share that you might not know about your body’s largest organ. Read on for seven interesting facts about your skin.
1. Your skin’s appearance and texture can give you clues about the rest of your health.
Sometimes, changes in your skin can signal changes in your health as a whole. For example, according to Brooke Jackson, MD, Director of the Skin Wellness Center of Chicago, “The hormones that the thyroid produces are directly responsible for the natural fats that protect the skin, as well as hair and cell growth and hair pigmentation.”
She explains that in a person with hyperthryroidism (when the thyroid overproduces thyroid hormone), the epidermis––the outer layer of skin––may thicken and skin may be soft. With hypothyroidism (when the thyroid under-produces thyroid hormone), on the other hand, symptoms include very dry skin and thickened skin on the palms and soles. Another way your skin can tip you off to health issues: Acanthosis nigricans, a condition in which skin around the neck darkens and changes in texture, is often associated with diabetes, according to D’Anne Kleinsmith, MD, dermatologist at William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak, MI.
2. Everyone has the same pigment in their skin that’s responsible for color.
Melanin, explains Josie Tenore, MD, SM, is a coloring pigment that is present in all people’s skin—regardless of race. “The difference in skin tone between people of different races—and between people of the same race––lies in how much of this pigment is present, and its distribution within the skin.”
More specifically, everyone—no matter how dark or pale they are––has the same number of melanocytes, which are the cells that make melanin, explains Arnold Oppenheim, MD, a board-certified dermatologist. “It’s their product, melanosomes—which contain the melanin––that differ. Some people have denser and larger ones, which make their skin darker.” Also, the denser and closer together they are, “the more protection the skin is afforded from skin cancer,” he says.
3. As we age, our skin sheds cells more slowly.
Ever wonder why children have such naturally rosy and dewy skin? While skin of all ages produces new cells which eventually move to the surface and shed off, young people’s skin does this more often, according to Dr. Tenore. “In kids, this happens every two to three weeks, which gives them that vibrant, shiny skin. But as we age, this process becomes slower. More dead cells stay on the surface, resulting in that dull, dehydrated look.”
She adds that exposure to direct sunlight slows down the sloughing off process even further because UV light decreases cellular turnover. Depending on your skin type—your dermatologist can identify yours––daily exfoliation or a topical antioxidant serum that contains retinoids, vitamins and peptides can help encourage cell turnover, according to Francesca Fusco, MD, a New York City dermatologist.
4. Stretch marks can be prevented—to a degree.
Pregnancy, weight fluctuations and even teenage growth spurts can all cause stretch marks, those squiggly lines that start out darker than your skin color and often appear on the hips, thighs and abdomen (but can crop up anywhere). When collagen and elastin initially break down, says Dr. Oppenheim, skin creates striae rubrae—red or purple stretch marks on light-colored skin—due to inflammation. When stretch marks are in this phase, applying retinoid creams to them—no matter where they appear––can “considerably lessen their appearance,” says Dr. Fusco. That’s because the medication promotes cell turnover and skin regeneration. Some older stretch marks, which are lighter in color and have indentations, can be treated with lasers to help smooth the skin, says Dr. Kleinsmith, but it depends on where they appear—ask your dermatologist if lasers can help reduce the appearance of your older stretch marks.
5. The oiliness of our skin dictates what type of hair grows in that area.
The relationship between hair and skin is a close one. “The whole sebaceous (oil) gland and hair apparatus is one unit,” says Dr. Oppenheim. “The oil gland grows out of the hair follicle, which it helps to lubricate.” But it’s the difference in the individual glands that affects hair type. According to Dr. Oppenheim, “Where we have large oil glands, which produce more oil, we have thin hairs; where we have small oil glands, which produce less oil, we have thick hair.” People have oily skin in the middle of their faces because there are large sebaceous glands there, and they have dry skin on the periphery because there are small oil glands there. This is why even men with heavy beards don’t grow hair in the middle of their faces.
6. Age spots should really be called “sun spots.”
Those brown spots that tend to crop up with age have little to do with the passing years, and much more to do with soaking up rays. “Age spots are the result of cumulative sun exposure and subsequent damage,” says Dr. Fusco. “They appear because pigment cells have accumulated in the top layer of skin.” To prevent sunspots, apply sunscreen in the morning every single day—and every few hours afterward if you’ll be in direct sunlight. “The minimum SPF you should use is 30; be sure that it’s broad spectrum to block UVB and UVA rays.” advises Dr. Fusco. Aim to use a marble-sized amount of block for your face and a shot glass–sized amount for your body. Though age spots aren’t directly related to age, seborriheic keratosis, benign hereditary moles that usually stick out from your skin, are. They vary in color from white to black, says Dr. Oppenheim, and tend to appear on the face, scalp and torso (but can show up anywhere except your palms, the soles of your feet and your mouth) as you grow older.
7. Melanomas don’t always have color.
If you’re on the lookout for dark moles to screen for skin cancer, you’re on the right track. But malignant spots aren’t always so easy to find. “Follow the Sesame Street rule—‘One of these things is not like the other,’” says Barbara Reed, MD, a dermatologist at the Denver Skin Clinic. “Melanomas can be red, purple, flesh-colored or even white. I think I’ve seen them in every color except green,” she explains. If a mole looks funny, grows, itches or just plain makes you obsess over it, Dr. Reed recommends heading to your dermatologist for a check-up. And always tell your doctor about any other new spots or skin irregularities that you notice.

Practice mindfulness to boost energy mindfulness
Mindfulness is a skill that’s been mastered by every great spiritual leader and is part of almost every spiritual practice that I know of. It will absolutely boost your energy when you learn how to do it. And good news – you don’t have to go to a monastery or a retreat or become a monk to learn it, practice it, and reap its energy-boosting rewards. You can apply it right now, in your own life, in your car, at the gym, at the dinner table, I a conversation with your coworkers or your significant other, or just sitting outside enjoying the summer breeze.
Here’s how to do it. For a few minutes every day, give complete and utter attention to being in the moment, to being fully present in what’s going on around you. If you’re talking to someone, listen carefully to every word. Try actually “recreating” that person’s experience as he talks to you, as if you’re living inside him for a few minutes, understanding what he’s saying, both with his words and his body language.
If you’re at the gym lifting weights, think of the muscle that’s being worked, put your mind into it, imagine it growing, experience the muscle fibers contracting with your effort, the blood circulating through your veins, and your breath filling your lungs with oxygen. If you’re eating flavor. If you’re walking down the street, start paying attention to what’s on the left of you. The right. Notice how loud the street noises are. Hear what people are saying. How many people are in front of you and what color hat is that guy on your left wearing?
MAKE YOURSELF AVAILABLE TO THE MOMENT
Being mindful may feel like a new experience to you. I know it did to me when I first started practicing it. But there’s almost nothing I can think of that will so forward your ability to be present for your life, savor every moment, enrich every interaction, and blow your energy level right out of the water.
The great spiritual masters do this every single moment of every single day. It’s called “being high on life”. And it all comes from the practice of mindfulness, of focused attention, and of being really available for what’s true and happening, right now, in this moment.
So practice mindfulness. Even for a few minutes, every single day. It’s the energy equivalent of wiping your windows with cleaner. All of a sudden, everything looks clear, clean, uncluttered, and new.

Rihanna Goes Blonde! Katy Perry is Pink for GHD!
Do blondes have more fun? Rihanna clearly thinks so.

After getting saucy in the back of a car while sporting a icy blonde crop (for an Armani campaign, we might add), it seems the star has become fond of the look. Because here she is sitting court-side during a basketball match yesterday afternoon with a whole new bleached ‘do. WOW.
Admittedly, Ri-Ri is known for her hair-changing ways, flitting from a sleek black cut to a Woody Woodpecker red quiff to a mop of brown curls in a matter of days. But this oh-so-sexy blonde style, for a photoshoot, is unlike anything we’ve seen her try before. And we like.
Earlier that day, the 23-year-old songstress tweeted a (topless) photo of herself with the message: “#Back2Work 1st Cover of the year!!!! #ELLE.” And while she wore a wig for Armani, this is the real deal, y’all: “lol! I dyed it for #ELLE…bleach + weave #WERQ.” Indeed.

In other hair news, we have another hair chameleon mixing things up: Ms Katy Perry. Like her BFF Rihanna, Katy’s known for her outlandish costumes and rainbow hair styles, so it was hardly surprising to see her dressing up to the absolute extreme for the latest GHD campaign. In her latest outing as the glam face of the brand’s Air Hairdryer, K-Pez has been transformed into an underwater goddess complete with shocking bubble gum pink tresses. It’d turn even the lusciously-haired Ariel green with envy.
Of course, Katy is now working a cobalt blue barnet that’s just terrific. But how long will it last? We give it a week…

Athletes Foot and Fungus Problems
Athlete’s foot typically affects the skin on the feet between the toes, but can move anywhere on the foot and can affect the toenails.
Athlete’s foot is a fungal infection of the skin and the nails, usually found on the skin between the toes. When the infection spreads to the toenails, they become thick and distorted.
Fungi are plant organisms (tinea pedis) such as mold and mildew and grow best in conditions that are moist. Bacteria may thrive as a secondary infection, which worsens the symptoms of the disorder and makes it more difficult to cure. A fungal infection is one of the most difficult nail and foot conditions to treat.
It is common to catch athlete’s foot from other people who have it by walking on floors that are moist or wet (e.g. at swimming pools and in shared bathroom facilities). Athlete’s foot is also much more common in people who tend to have moist feet. Athlete’s foot can also be spread by sharing other people’s shoes or personal care items such as towels and wash cloths.
Athlete’s foot and fungus may also spread to other parts of the body, notably the groin and underarms, by those who scratch their and then touch themselves elsewhere.
Symptoms include:
- On the skin:
- Reddened, cracked, and peeling skin
- Some bleeding
- Itching
- Burning
- Stinging sensation
- Development of small blisters (Blisters often lead to cracking of the skin. When blisters break, small raw areas of tissue are exposed, causing pain and swelling. Itching and burning may increase as the infection spreads. In severe cases the skin may thicken, like a callus, and begin to scale.)
- On the toe nail:
- Change in color (yellow or brown)
- Nail gets thicker
- Bad odor
- Debris collects beneath the nail
- White marks on the nail
Treatment
Self-care treatments:
Bathe your feet at least once a day with soap and warm water. Dry thoroughly after bathing and keep your feet dry. Change socks frequently and buy socks that absorb moisture, such as cotton and wool. Expose your feet to the air for short periods of time throughout the day (do not walk barefoot, however). Wear sandals with open toes whenever possible.
There are a variety of over-the-counter products that can be used to treat the tinea pedis fungus, such as:
- Gordochom Fungicide-Germicide
- Tineacide Antifungal Cream for Foot Fungus
- Tineacide® Antifungal Shoe Spray for Foot Fungus
- Bromi-Lotion Antiperspirant
- RESTORE AF – topical solution restores infected nails
After a period of time, if products used for athlete’s foot and fungus fail, prescription topical or oral antifungal drugs, such as Sporonax or Lamisil, can be prescribed by your Podiatrist.
Prevention:
- Wear sandals or shoes when walking on moist or wet floors
- Don’t share shoes or personal care items such as towels
- Wear socks made of absorbent materials such as cotton or wool
- Change socks frequently if you perspire heavily
- Choose footwear that allows for the circulation of air
- Keep the floors in shared facilities clean and dry
- Keep your feet clean and dry by dusting Bromi-Talc Foot Powder in shoes and stockings and on your feet
- Clean athletic shoes frequently with a good athletic shoe cleaning product
Fungal Nails
Fungal infection of toenails, called Onychomycosis, is a common foot health problem that many people do not recognize. Fungi are simple parasitic plant organisms, such as molds and mildew, that do not require sunlight for growth. They easily attack the nail, thriving off keratin, the nail’s protein substance.
Onychomycosis is an infection underneath the nail that can also penetrate the nail. If it is ignored, it could impair one’s ability to work or even walk because it is frequently accompanied by thickening of the nails, which then cannot be easily trimmed, and may cause pain while wearing shoes. This disease can frequently be accompanied by a secondary bacterial and/or yeast infection in/or about the nail plate.
Symptoms:
- Change in color (yellow or brown)
- Nail gets thicker
- Bad odor
- Debris collects beneath the nail
- White marks on the nail
- This infection is capable of spreading to other toenails, the skin or even the fingernails.
Toenails are especially vulnerable around damp areas where people are likely to be walking barefoot – swimming pools, locker rooms, and showers. Injury to the nail bed may make it more susceptible to all types of infection, including fungal infection. Those who suffer chronic diseases, such as diabetes, circulatory problems, or immune-deficiency conditions, are especially prone to fungal nails.
There are a variety of products that can be used on the foot and toe nails that kill the tinea pedis fungus, such as:
- RESTORE AF – topical solution restores infected nails
- Anti-Fungal Nail Treatment Kit
- Gordochom Fungicide-Germicide
- Tineacide Antifungal Cream for Foot Fungus
- Tineacide® Antifungal Shoe Spray for Foot Fungus
Prevention
Clean, dry feet resist disease. Wash the feet with soap and water, and dry thoroughly. Shower shoes should be worn in public areas. Shoes, socks and hosiery should be changed daily. Use a quality foot powder, talcum not cornstarch. Buy shoes that fit well and are made of materials that breathe.
Seeing your Podiatrist
Your Podiatrist can detect a fungal infection early. A suitable treatment plan may include prescribing topical or oral medication (such a Lamisil or Sporonax), and debridgement (removal of diseased nail matter and debris) of an infected nail. Debridgment is one of the most common foot care procedures performed by DPMs. In some cases, surgical treatment may be required. Temporary removal of the infected nail can be performed to permit direct application of a topical antifungal. Permanent removal of a chronically painful nail, which has not responded to any other treatment, permits the fungal infection to be cured and prevents the return of a deformed nail.

Caffeine May Alter Women’s Estrogen Levels
But effect is different in Asians, whites, study says
Caffeine changes women’s estrogen levels and has different effects in Asian and white women, a new study says.
More than 250 women, ages 18 to 44, took part in the study between 2005 and 2007. On average, they consumed 90 milligrams of caffeine a day, about the equivalent of one cup of caffeinated coffee.
Estrogen is the reproductive hormone produced by the ovaries.
Asian women who consumed an average of 200 milligrams or more of caffeine a day (equivalent to about two cups of coffee) had elevated estrogen levels compared to women who consumed less. But white women who consumed the same amount of caffeine had slightly lower estrogen levels than women who consumed less.
Black women who consumed 200 or more milligrams of caffeine daily had elevated estrogen levels, but this finding was not statistically significant, said the U.S. National Institutes of Health researchers and their colleagues.
The caffeine consumed by the women in the study came from any of these sources: coffee, black tea, green tea and caffeinated soda. The findings differed slightly when the researchers considered the source of caffeine individually.
Consuming 200 milligrams of caffeine from coffee mirrored the overall findings. But consumption of more than one cup each day of caffeinated soda or green tea was associated with higher estrogen in all three groups of women, according to the study published online in the February issue of the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition.
The caffeine-related changes in estrogen levels did not appear to affect women’s ovulation, said the researchers, who followed the women for up to two menstrual cycles.
About 89 percent of U.S. women ages 18 to 34 consume the caffeine equivalent of 1.5 to two cups of coffee a day, according to the authors.
“The results indicate that caffeine consumption among women of child-bearing age influences estrogen levels,” Enrique Schisterman, of the Division of Epidemiology, Statistics and Prevention Research at the U.S. National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, said in an NIH news release.
“Short term, these variations in estrogen levels among different groups do not appear to have any pronounced effects. We know that variations in estrogen level are associated with such disorders as endometriosis, osteoporosis, and endometrial, breast and ovarian cancers. Because long-term caffeine consumption has the potential to influence estrogen levels over a long period of time, it makes sense to take caffeine consumption into account when designing studies to understand these disorders,” Schisterman said.

Beauty at the Critics Choice Awards 2012: Charlize Theron’s Plait, Diane Kruger’s Pink Lip, Elle Fanning’s Boho Waves
So we’ve already seen what the stars wore to the Critics Choice Awards 2012, but how did they compare from their neck up? It’s time to crack out our Beauty Jury hat and assess the beauty looks from last night. Join us!
Do The Twist

We begin with Charlize Theron who looked like a medieval princess thanks to a ladylike plait sweeping into a swirly side bun. It was the perfect sleek-and-chic accompaniment to polish off her Azzedine Alaia gown.

Evan Rachel Wood could have been Charlize’s doppelganger last night, swathed as she was in an almost identical floor-sweeping black gown by Valentino with her blonde hair pulled into a twisty ‘do. We love the array of ways ERW is wearing her crop, from a funky quiff to this glam-appropriate style.

Meanwhile, Emma Stone also went for a lady-like up ‘do to show off the interesting neckline on her Jason Wu frock. We’re loving how she’s softened the look with a side-sweeping fringe and wispy strands to frame her face.
Colour Pop Pink

Another lady in black was Kirsten Dunst and how has she perked up her Christian Dior frock? With a colour-popping lip, that’s how! Bravo for picking a striking shade of pink that’s oh-so-on-trend.
Great minds think alike and Diane Kruger went the same colour-popping route. Her grey and yellow Prada gown could’ve easily washed her out if it wasn’t for a splash of hot pink. For extra style points, she perfectly matched the colour to her clutch bag. What a clever lady!
Be A Boho

Admittedly, it may be a little creepy to be so enthralled by a 13-year-old, but we can’t help ourselves when Elle Fanning continues to knock it out of the sartorial ball park. The Rodarte gown she wore last night was another hit and she made the most of those sunflower embellishments by pairing it with lashings of beachy blonde waves. And would ya look at that kooky yellow eyeliner she’s sporting? You go girl!

Elle’s fellow boho babe was Elizabeth Olsen. We’re wondering if the girls made a matchy-matchy plan beforehand because they both chose yellow frocks topped off with tousled tresses. Elizabeth’s look is a tad more styled in comparison to Ms Fanning but the laid-back sentiment is still there.
So twisted, colour-popping or boho – which beauty look will you be trying?
